Abstract
Deformations of chalcogenide and oxide glasses subjected to intense uniaxial compression have been studied. These glasses undergo pressure-induced coalescence after the bulks are fractured with crackinag. The pressurized glasses exhibit optical anisotropy at 1 atm. The squeezing phenomenon appears to be unique to glassy phases, the origin of which is attributable to plastic deformation.
