Abstract
High temperature reactions of magnesium with heavy fuel oil ash have been studied in static reaction tests and the products formed have been identified. The effect of SO3 partial pressure on fuel ash reactions and the corrosivity of the compounds formed have been established. This work has enabled development of a systematic method of predicting deposit compositions and characteristics from a knowledge of fuel ash composition and burner operating conditions. Extensive comparisons are made between predicted compositions and actual analysis of deposits obtained from a wide variety of commercial burner units.
