Abstract
The status of mud crabs of the family Xanthidae previously referred to Neopanope texana texana (Stimpson, 1859) and N. texana sayi (Smith, 1869) is reviwed. It is concluded, based on the examination of types and other material, that both are distinct species allopatric in distribution; N. texana occurring in the Gulf of Mexico and N. sayi occurring along the east coast of North America. Both species are compared to N. packardii (Kingsley, 1879) and a key to the genus Neopanope in the western Atlantic is presented. Diagnostic characters of the species are illustrated.
