Abstract
Saline homogenates of human leukocytes were found to contain an inhibitor for human serum desoxyribonuclease (DNase). Such prepns. also inhibited the "lupus erythematosus cell phenomenon" (L. E. cell). The DNase inhibitor was found to be relatively species specific, and both inhibitors were stable at 56[degree]C, non-dialyzable, and destroyed by proteolytic enzymes and by wide variations in pH from neutrality. The inhibitors are located in the "cytoplasmic supernatant." Leukocytes washed with saline contain less DNase inhibitor and are more sensitive to L.E. cell transformation. The possible identity of the L.E. cell and DNase inhibitors and their role in the mechanism of the L.E. cell phenomenon are discussed. Keywords
