Abstract
An examination is made of the effect of the initial rate of absorption (IRA) of structural clay units on the bonding ability of mortars to those units. This paper examines relatively recent data on the effect of IRA on the bond between mortar and structural clay masonry units. Included is a summary of data for both small-scale prisms and full-size walls from several sources. The paper also suggests areas and methods of research to more specifically identify the mechanisms of mortar bond to brick and other clay masonry units. Keywords
