Abstract
SYNOPSIS Cooper et al. describe for the first time a much heralded procedure for the surgical treatment of advanced emphysema. By removing “nonfunctional” lung, thoracic distention was reduced, and respiratory mechanics were improved in 20 patients. The use of bovine pericardial strips was reported to reduce air leak. Follow-up for an average of 6 months suggested significant physiologic and quality of life improvement in these patients.
