Coherent Control for a Two-level System Coupled to Phonons

Abstract
The interband polarizations induced by two phase-locked pulses show strong interference effects depending on the time tau_1 separating the pulses. The four-wave mixing signal from a third diffracted pulse is coherently controlled by tuning tau_1. The four-wave mixing response is evaluated exactly for a two-level system coupled to a single optical phonon. It shows quantum beats with the phonon frequency whose shape and strength depends on the the coupling to the phonon and on tau_1. For a small coupling the amplitude of the sinusoidal beatings rapidly oscillates with tau_1 at the excitation frequency. In the strong interaction regime however, the signal of saw-teeth shape does not depend on tau_1 except for bursts at resonant times where the phase sensitivity is recovered.
