Abstract
Two types of approaches are suggested for measuring the attractiveness of seacoasts for settlement in light of growing Soviet interest in developing coastal areas (as opposed to traditional inland development) in connection with a growth of export-import operations. One approach uses a model based on shoreline configuration and spatial relationships between land and sea areas gravitating toward the coastal segment under study. The other approach is based on a selected set of conditions of both sea and land areas as evaluated in terms of a weighted scale of points. Further work is proposed along both lines of research. The first approach requires further perfecting of parameters, such as costs, distance and resource availability, for measuring the attractiveness of seacoasts for settlement. The second approach requires techniques for converting the point scale into actual measures and for determining objective weights. Keywords
