Abstract
In the name of “development,” peasants throughout the Third World have been convinced to turn their small plots over to agribusiness for use in producing cash crops for the world market. This paper concerns one tragic example of this process—the banana export industry in the Philippines. Formerly self-provisioning small farmers have been drawn into a system controlled by three transnational corporations (United Brands, Del Monte, and Castle & Cooke) and plunged into a cycle of perpetual indebtedness and exploitation. In such situations, food has become an endangered need. Keywords
