Abstract
Evidence is presented to show the validity of soil and petiole analyses as diagnostic tools in planning N fertilizer programs. A highly significant correlation was found between the initial soil nitrate level and yield of seed cotton (Gossy pium hirsutum) without additional N when the soil was sampled as outlined. The level of nitrate N in leaf petioles was found to be a good indicator of the N nutrition of the cotton plant. The N needs of cotton can be determined throughout the growing season by utilizing soil and petiole analyses. Keywords
