Concerning the Species, Achlya bisexualis

Abstract
It is shown that male, as well as female, strains of the heterothallic species A. bisexualis Coker and A. Couch are characterized by the production of structures known as spherical gemmae. It is proposed that A. bisexualis be limited to only those cross-conjugating forms of Achlya that produce spherical gemmae. Self-conjugation was found to occur in all male strains studied but in only 1 female strain. It is proposed that the homothallic species A. flexuosa be placed in synonymy with A. bisexualis.
