Abstract
Routine chest X-ray examination of general hospital admissions, though of manifest value in tuberculosis case finding, is not a common practice. A survey conducted in Sept., 1948, revealed that only 247 of the 4539 general hospitals in the U. S. had such programs in action. A detailed analysis of the findings of several studies as to the incidence of unrecognized tuberculosis in general hospitals indicates that X-ray evidence of tuberculosis appears in from 2.6% to 8.1% of the cases admitted to hospitals, and the reported rates for proven cases vary from 0.6% to 1.8%. Procedures of programs now in operation in University Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and in the New York and Wisconsin State Health Depts. may be applicable to other hospitals.
