Studies on Dilantin Hyperplastic Gingivitis the Role of Magnesium

Abstract
Epileptic patients under Dilantin therapy were divided into 2 groups of 10 patients per group: Group I - those with hyperplastic gingivitis: Group II. - those with normal gingiva. Serum magnesium levels were determined by flame photometry, for both groups. Results: There were no differences in the serum magnesium levels between the 2 groups. The serum magnesium levels ranged from 1.51 - 217 mEq./L in Group I, and from 1.67 - 2.06mEq./L in Group II. In addition, all the serum magnesium levels were within the accepted range of normality (normal range 1.5 - 2.5mEq./L in our laboratory). Conclusion: The gingival hyperplastic gingivitis which occurrs in many patients on Dilantin therapy is not the result of a magnesium deficiency.
