The Radiological Diagnosis of Gastric Atrophy

Abstract
Gastric biopsies and barium meal examinations were performed on 82 patients. There was close correlation between the radiological and histological findings. Normal gastric folds are approximately 1 cm in height and are a prominent feature in the fundus and along the upper two thirds of the greater curvature. In gastric atrophy the folds may be entirely absent or considerably reduced. The fundus may be bare and the greater curvature may be smooth or show only a few small deformities. The importance of the radiological recognition of gastric atrophy in the investigation of megaloblastic anaemias is discussed.
