Abstract
Photodissociation of Na2+ formed by sequential excitation and ionization of Na2 by an Ar+ laser has been studied. Experiments using a single frequency cw dye laser tuned to a D line are also described, and compared to previous multimode experiments. The results of both sets of experiments support our previous hypothesis that Na+ formed in sodium vapor irradiated with light from a cw multimode dye laser tuned to a D line result from photodissociation of incipient Na2+ formed in Na(3p)/Na(3p) associative ionization.
