Abstract
Ice X is a phase having centrosymmetric hydrogen bonds that are made by compressing ice VII or VIII to ∼500 kbar. The dynamic longitudinal charge of its O–H stretching oscillation, which is defined as the change of dipole moment with O–H distance, has been determined by extrapolating from the integrated infrared intensities of the O–H stretching vibration of a dilute solution of HDO in D2O ice VII in the range 24–189 kbar. It is about one electronic charge, which corresponds to an integrated infrared absorption intensity that is 45 times greater than the value in the vapor, and is negative. Keywords
