GAS-CONTAINING BRAIN ABSCESSES

Abstract
It is important for the radiologist to recognize intracranial gas and to differentiate between traumatic pneumocephalus and a gas-containing brain abscess. Unrecognized or improperly treated penetrating wounds of the brain are the most common cause of gas-containing brain abscess and Clostridium is the usual etiologic agent. Differential diagnosis, when possible, depends upon the time of appearance and distribution of the gas. Immediate recognition and institution of therapy for such an abscess frequently results in a cure of the patient.
