Abstract
The stratigraphic, structural, chemical and genetic aspects of phosphate deposits of the Soviet Union are reviewed in order to determine principles of occurrence for use in future prospecting. Four groups of phosphate occurrence are separately described: 1) on ancient platforms, 2) on Epihercynian platforms where the Paleozoic basement is covered by relatively undisturbed Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks, 3) in geosynclines, and 4) in marginal depressions and basins. It is concluded that platform and geosynclinal deposits are the two main types, and the other two are transitional resulting from tectonic deformation and foredeep deposition. M. Russell
