Abstract
Rocketsonde observations from Kwajalein in the tropical Pacific were used to determine the amplitude and phase of the semiannual variation of the zonal wind throughout the upper stratosphere and mesosphere (up to heights of 78 km). The results appear to confirm Hirota's (1978) earlier observations of a strong semiannual oscillation in the tropical upper mesosphere, which is nearly 180° out of phase with the more familiar stratopause semiannual oscillation.
