Dielectric measurements of solutions of poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate using a pseudo-random noise dielectric spectrometer

Abstract
Dielectric dispersion and absorption curves of m-cresol solutions of poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) are measured by means of a pseudo-random noise dielectric spectrometer (PN-dielectric spectrometer) recently developed in our laboratory. This device senses the response of a sample solution to pseudo-random noise applied in the time domain. The Fourier transform of the response gives the transfer function in the frequency domain, from which the complex permittivity is obtained. In order to control the whole system and for successive calculations, a minicomputer is used. This PN-dielectric spectrometer covers 10 Hz 250 kHz and needs X–Y recorder. By means of a simultaneous measurement of all the frequency components and their continuous plotting, precise profiles of dielectric dispersion and absorption curves and the Cole–Cole plots of several solutions of PBLG were obtained. The results agree with many data which were previously obtained by the impedance bridge method in the frequency domain.
