Abstract
This paper considers education in the United States both in the fields of cartography and in remote sensing in a comparative framework. For discussion purposes our paper pairs these two fields that have much in common and have components that appear to be in the process of becoming integrated into a new conceptual model. The paper examines briefly the societal and technological milieu in which the education system functions. It examines the ongoing development of conceptual models in the two fields and attempts to forecast future development of these models. The status and trends of education in both fields is discussed and special attention is devoted to major problems that need to be addressed and to the identification of planning needs for the development of future programs. Keywords
