Abstract
Matrix Hartree-Fock wave functions are calculated for the 2Σ+ ground state and excited 2II levels of MgF. Both the calculations and empirical arguments suggest that the first excited state is derived from a... π4π regular configuration, but paradoxically experimental evidence favours an inverted... π3σ2 configuration for this state. Keywords
