Abstract
The problem of reconstructing a synchronie Proto‐Indo‐European culture from the linguistic evidence is introduced. Some of the major attempts to effect a cultural seriation from the lexical development of the Proto‐Indo‐European language are briefly examined and criticized. It is concluded that Proto‐Indo‐European as both a linguistic and cultural phenomenon can only be confined to a loose diachrony dating c. 4000 to 2500 B.c.
