Abstract
A recommendation for caution is made with regardto prolonged administration of drugs and hormones. Evidence is presented to demonstrate a variety of persistent or cyclic changes in behavior, mood and metabolism of rats and human patients following discontinuance of drugs or hormones (sulfamerazine, thiourea, pro-pylthiouracil, aminopyrine, sodium barbital, cortisone acetate, estradiol or progesterone) after prolonged administration. In the screening of drugs for medical use, the lack of concomitant side effects and other untoward effects during and immediately after treatment is no assurance against subtle pathological changes that may appear some time after withdrawal of treatment.
