Abstract
A prototypic model of nonverbal communication development derived from the philosophy of Austin (1962) and the psychology of Piaget (1952, 1954, 1962) is presented. The model is used as a structural framework for formulating a strategy for assessment of early nonverbal communicative behavior. A developmental-ethological perspective of assessment is advanced. The assessment model specifies: (a) the parameters of communication development, (b) the sequential patterns of the acquisition of nonverbal communicative acts, and (c) the conditions under which assessment might best occur. Keywords
