Abstract
The most characteristic trait of the first ballot of the general election which took place on 23rd fune 1968 is the very great increase in the ma jority if the majority has gained some support from the left wing electorate of 1967 the major part of its gains come from the votes of centrists and moderates 154 seats .144 of which went to the U.D.R. were filled on the first ballot week later the second ballot confirmed this tendency certain left wing electors having furthermore abandoned the Republican disci pline Geographically the extension of the Gaullist electorate towards the South is particularly interesting This evolution was determined on the whole by the events of May and June yet it seems to have its roots further back and to be reflected in the can tonal elections of 1967-1968
