Long-period variables in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract
The results of a search for large-amplitude red variables in the Radcliffe Variable Star Field of the SMC are presented. Infrared photometry is given for each object found. A comparison is made between the populations of such variables in the SMC, the LMC and the Galaxy. The period–luminosity relation followed by the mira variables, which are predominantly of carbon type, is found to be consistent with that for the LMC.
