Examined were the increasingly popular special units for nursing home patients with Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type using published and unpublished reports, as well as policy manuals, and personal observations. Identified were the critical dimensions on which these units can differ. A discussion of the heterogeneity of special units is provided, along with issues needing the attention of investigators of these units.
