Abstract
A complementary study of the phase transition in barium sodium niobate by electron microscopy and electron diffraction was performed. Nucleation and multiplication of microscopic domains were examined on heating. These processes correspond to the appearance of the 2q-incommensurate phase. Experimental results show that the large thermal hysteresis, the complex memory effect, and the slow relaxation are related to the coexistence of the 1q- and 2q-phases.Keywords
