Preconcentration of Trace Elements in Aluminum Alloys Using a Chelating Ion-Exchanger and Determination by ICP-AES

Abstract
The Hyphan resin, a chelating ion-exchanger, is used to preconcentrate several metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Ti, and Zn) in aluminum alloys, before analysis by ICP atomic emission. The recovery of the preconcentration procedure is 100% for most metals. The accuracy of the method is evaluated by analysis of ALCAN and NIST standard reference materials. The results are in good agreement with the certified values. The preconcentration method can be used in a batch or in a flow analyzer mode in conjunction with an ICP/atomic emission spectrometer.
