MoMaF : The Mock Map Facility

  • 11 September 2003
Abstract
We present the Mock Map Facility, a new tool to transform the results of our GALICS hybrid model of hierarchical galaxy formation into catalogues of virtual observations. Mock observing cones are built up from the snapshots of the cosmological simulation and the outputs of the semi-analytic post-processing, from which mock images are easily synthesised. We describe our technique of cone and image making, and we quantify the artifacts that are introduced by the method. The large catalogues of mock properties that are produced by MOMAF are stored in an on-line database that allows any potential user to recover galaxy samples through simple SQL queries through a user-friendly Web interface. This tool can be used to test the predictions of our model against observations, to prepare observing strategies for deep surveys, and to test data processing pipelines.
