Abstract
This descriptive study involved questioning 106 children about their perception of factors related to the placement of their parents in nursing homes. Results indicated over half of the decisions were related to parental health and availability of family care. Relationships between family members usually remained the same or improved after placement. Children felt the need for personal suppon, medical advice, and information about alternatives and agencies. The majority of these needs were not met. Feelings of love, sadness, guilt, helplessness, and resignation were common. Family counseling and supportive educational groups are recommended to aid decision making and adjustment. Keywords
