Abstract
Young puppies were placed on a ration consisting of sucrose 66%, casein 19%, cottonseed oil 8%, cod liver oil 3%, salt mixture 4%, and supplemented with pure thiamin, riboflavin, and nicotinic acid. This ration permitted neither growth nor survival; addition of liver extract or certain fractions of liver extract produced normal growth. Some fractions produced microcytic hypochromic anemia which was readily curable with pure vit. B6. Other fractions which failed to give growth became adequate when pure vit. B6 was given. Dogs receiving only tke 4 pure B vits. failed to grow, but always responded to highly purified liver fractions showing factor W activity by rat assay. Liver extract evidently contains additional essential factors for dogs, one of which may be identical with factor W.This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
