Abstract
Owing to profound changes over the last two or three decades library provisions for humanistic scholarship can no longer be taken for granted. Humanistic research, which is library-centred and predominantly text-centred, requires a special type of library which allows the scholar to bring together highly complex configurations of texts. The only library which makes this possible is the universal reference library. This must therefore constitute the central element in the library provisions for the humanities and be surrounded with peripheral institutions which allow the researcher to do his preparatory reading. Keywords
