Abstract
The rapid disappearance of virgin lowland Dipterocarp forests in Southeast Asia through timberlogging, shifting cultivation, and military devastation is described in this paper. A strong case is made for wide scale exploitation of forest resources on a sustained yield basis and a detailed analysis is made of the various aspects of the impact of logging on the forest ecosystem and the natural regeneration possible in case selective felling systems are being followed.
