Abstract
Kidney Graft Survival Rate Improving A kidney transplant from a live, related donor has a 75% chance of surviving one year. Cadaver grafts have a 45% chance of one year survival. These figures from the Sixth Report of the Human Kidney Transplant Registry are based upon 1,741 renal transplants performed worldwide and reported to the Registry through Jan 1, 1968. They represent a significant improvement in graft survival during the past two years, Joseph E. Murray, MD, told the Second International Congress of the Transplantation Society. "The results reflect the favorableeffects of increasing facility and refinement in the selection of appropriate donors, procurement and preservation of cadaver kidneys, and immunosuppressive therapy," Dr. Murray said. The Registry, established in 1963 as a clearing house for data on renal transplants, receives reports from approximately 100 medical centers throughout the world.
