Abstract
We have measured the magnetoresistance of polycrystalline CePb3 at 50 millikelvin in magnetic fields up to 20 tesla. At low magnetic fields, a positive magnetoresistance corresponding to the destruction of the antiferromagnetic ground state is observed, with a peak resistivity of 3 µΩ-cm. Above 5 tesla, we observe a pronounced negative magetoresistance, with the resistivity reduced to 0.6 µΩ-cm by a magnetic field of 20 tesla. Ce.6La.4Pb3 also exhibits a five fold reduction in resistivity in 20 tesla magnetic field. The magnetoresistance of Ce.6La.4Pb3 is well described by the single ion Kondo model for a double ground state, suggesting that the high field behavior of the heavy fermion system CePb3 may be similarly described. Measurements on the off-stochiometric CePb2.97 suggest that the high field resistivity is strongly sensitive to stochiometry. Within our experimental resolution, no magnetic field induced superconductivity was observed in these samples, contrary to some previous measurements of polycrystalline CePb3.Keywords
