ADRENAL CORTICAL TUMOR CAUSING HIRSUTISM WITHOUT OTHER EVIDENCE OF VIRILIZATION

Abstract
A case report is presented of a female patient with hirsutism of 14 yrs. duration referable to an adrenal cortical tumor. The only evidence of virilization consisted of the marked hirsutism and the masculine distr. of musculature. There was no deepening of the voice, enlargement of the clitoris, nor interference with normal ovarian activity. 17-ketosteroid excretion prior to surgery averaged 70 mg./24 hrs. It seems probable that this tumor was secreting an excessive amt. of the anabolic, relatively nonandrogenic steroid, which is normally manufactured by the postpubertal adrenal cortex.
