A note on evaluation of complex man-machine systems

Abstract
Almost 200 documents reporting results of evaluative studies of complex man-machine systems are classified in terms of domain of study, method, approach to measurement, type of data, data collection methods, measures assessed, and nature of results. An analysis of the degree to which definitive evaluation results were produced as a function of a study's classification is discussed. The results are used to suggest several guidelines for design of evaluation efforts.
