Abstract
Four new media for culturing root canals were tried against 4 of the most fre-quently used media as controls. 709 root canals were cultured over a period of 2 yrs. Of these 184 were positive on one or more of the media. Of the new media introduced, a 2% soln. of trypticase broth containing 1% dextrose at pH of 7.2 gave the best results (90.6%). Brain heart infusion (Difco), the best control, detected 86.1% of known positives. The other 3 exptl. media gave positive results in approx. half of the known positive canals, and were judged unfit. By using the 2 media, trypticase dextrose pH 7.2 and brain heart infusion (pH 7.4) routine root canal culturing, a percentage of 97.8 of positive teeth can be detected, the author states. The organism most frequently cultured was [gamma] type streptococcus which accounted for 44.5% of the cultures. 7% of the cultures were mixed. Keywords
