Scalar Mesons inππandK¯K: Results of a Unitary Amplitude Analysis

Abstract
The ππK¯K S wave has been extracted from an amplitude analysis of K¯K production. With use of unitarity constraints, evidence has been found for a resonance in ππK¯K at 1425±15 MeV/c2 having a width 160±30 MeV/c2; this state is a likely candidate for the QQ¯, JPC=0++ nonet. It is shown that the S*(980), which is a background to this resonance, must be a very broad effect and is likely a K¯K virtual bound state.
