Abstract
A portable, instantaneously reading and continuously recording, respirable dust measuring instrument, SIMSLIN II, has recently been developed at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment. The unit is of rugged construction for use in coal mines and similar hostile environments. A light-scattering technique is used to determine the respirable dust concentration, which is displayed as a digital reading calibrated in mg/m3. A solid state memory unit stores all information for retrieval at a convenient time. This paper gives a brief description of the instrument and detailed results of field trials held at two coal mines and a quarry. Keywords
