Abstract
Indirect measurement of caloric expenditure in men doing heavy or light work revealed that the employer''s relative index of the physical demand imposed by various jobs was valid. In subjects working at similar jobs not requiring lifting, caloric expenditure was closely related to body weight. The dependence of pulmonary ventilation on energy expenditure was close and did not vary in the 2 groups of men. Keywords
