Abstract
Experimental portal-systemic shuntings is accompanied by a reduction of the soluble brain proteins. Isoelectric focusing does not indicate any selective decrease of 1 particular protein or group of proteins. The reduction persists with sustained shunting. The interference with brain protein metabolism is compatible with a grossly normal behavior, alertness and locomotion. [Portal-systemic shunting is thought to be an important prerequisite for hepatic encephalopathy.].Keywords
