Abstract
In common barley (Hordeum vulgare) the frequency of mutation induced by x-rays is 4.9X10-6 per r-unit of radiation intensity. In common oats (Avena sativa and A. byzantina) and common wheat (Triticum vulgare) the frequency of induced mutation is much lower. In species of Avena and Triticum with the basic chromosome number, 7n (A. brevis, A. strigosa, T. monococ-cum), the rate is comparable to that in H. vulgare (also 7II). In T. dicoccum and T. durum (14n) induced mutations occur at a rate distinctly lower than that in T. monococcum. The differences are ascribed to gene reduplication in the polyploid species.
