The polarization and magnetic field of RE J1938 - 461 during its low state

Abstract
We present intensity, polarization and spectropolarimetric data on the newly discovered AM Herculis system RE J1938 – 461 during a low state of activity. RE J1938 – 461 was found by the ROSAT all-sky survey of extreme-ultraviolet sources. Its period of 2.33 h places it in the middle of the usual 2–3 h period gap for cataclysmic variables. The spectrum of RE J1938 – 461 is strongly modulated in frequency, showing the presence of two dominant cyclotron humps indicative of a magnetic field of 56 MG at one of the poles on the white dwarf surface.
