Abstract
Polyplacophorans, previously unreported from the Silurian of North America, have been recovered from trilobite–cephalopod accumulations in Wenlockian–Ludlovian carbonate buildups at five localities in the central United States. The specimens, which occur as isolated valves, are preserved as impressions, primarily of the ventral surface, in dolomitic matrix. Poor preservation precludes precise taxonomic determination of most specimens; these are described as nine morphotypes. However, two new taxa are erected (Chelodes raaschi sp. nov.; Hawthorneachiton lowenstami gen. et sp. nov.). Although rare, polyplacophorans apparently are a widespread and persistent faunal element of Silurian carbonate buildups.
