Abstract
The viscosity, thermal expansion, and density of B2O3–GeO2 glasses exhibit negative deviations from additivity for all intermediate glasses, whereas the refractive index exhibits positive deviations from compositions. This behavior is due to the changes in the environment of the network‐forming units as the over‐all composition is varied between GeO2 and B2O3. There is no evidence of macroscopic phase separation in these glasses. It is concluded that all binary glassformer systems should exhibit such deviations from additivity in their properties; however, the nature of these deviations will depend upon the specific glassformers involved. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
