Abstract
Hospice concepts and proposals are examined in order to identify moral problems presented by this new direction in health care. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the hospice concept's alleged humanitarian superiority and the emphasis on cost efficiency present in much of the hospice literature and in recent Congressional legislation. This emphasis on cost raises serious questions about the meaning of hospice concepts for the well-being of patients, society's valuation of life, and medical ethics. Keywords
