Abstract
Efficient pion production is the first requisite for efficient muon production. The maximum number of negative pions that can be obtained in a particular projectile-target combination is studied as a function of operating energy. Tertiary pions produced in secondary collisions are included. Possibilities of reducing muon production costs are suggested and discussed. Keywords
